Before guzzling a diet soda in a haze of guilt-free carbonation, bear in mind that it may only be adding to your waistline. At least that's the conclusion of a recently completed 12 year study. The study looked at 474 people, ages 65 to 74, and found that, on average, those who drank diet sodas ended up with waistlines that increased three times more than those who avoided them. People who consumed more than two diet sodas a day had waistlines that increased five times more than the nondiet soda drinkers, which included people who drank water, juices and even regular sodas, said Helen Hazuda, chief of clinical epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, and one of the study's investigators.

Dear Dr. Wendling, I have never written a testimonial before on anything, but I am moved to write at this time. Let me start by saying, I am a procrastinator by nature, particularly when it comes to doing something I perceive to be uncomfortable, painful or unattractive. For this reason, I managed to avoid straightening my teeth for 60 years. Finally, I became convinced that there were issues with my continually shifting teeth that made doing "nothing" more difficult, and potentially more painful and unattractive than actually doing "something". So, with fear and trepidation I set about looking at my options. I spoke with several professionals before I spoke with you, Dr Wendling, but from the moment that I set foot in your office and met you and your gracious and friendly staff, I felt I was in the right hands. You were cool and relaxed and took the time and the energy to explain all the possibilities for what I needed to achieve. I finally decided to go for the Invisalign treatment. Even though you were reassuring, you did make me aware that a small percentage of people find them uncomfortable, and are unable to be compliant enough to get the optimum results. I was pretty sure if there were to be a non compliant population, I would be likely to be in it. I don't follow directions easily or eagerly. I probably worried you as well. I began treatment 14 weeks ago, as I write this. I am completely blown away, at how easy, fast and fun this process is. Even the cost was financed over two years a with 0% interest, making it affordable to boot. I already notice my teeth are significantly straighter; the aligners are so comfortable that I actually prefer to have them in than out. I balked at having to wear a lifetime retainer at night, and now feel this will not be a problem at all. So far, no one has noticed that I am wearing anything on my teeth, even after I point it out to them, they are that invisible. I tell everyone who will listen about this, and can't believe I waited this long to do something. The only upside is that now that I am older, time goes so much faster, that having a cosmetic process that takes a year or so to complete, and one that I am anxious to see the final results, makes life move a little slower. This is a good thing for me. It's not quite like watching a kettle boil, but you get the idea. On the other hand, the treatment seems to be going so much faster than it would have seemed to me, had I done this in my adolescence. Getting an new tray every two weeks and tracking my progress with you every six weeks, gives something to look forward to, and it is fun noticing the changes with each new session. Our office utilizes digital technology reducing your radiation from dental x-rays by about 85%. Most people are surprised to learn that by the time they have tooth pain, it will probably require a root canal. Routine dental x-rays help catch cavities in their early stages and avoid aggressive, expensive root canals or even tooth loss. Did you know that the average length of time before a dental crown or filling re-decays is only about a decade? We also find that many root canals re-infect and have to be redone after a decade. Cavities in between your teeth can only be found with dental x-rays and can form in as little as six months. Many other very important conditions are diagnosed with dental x-rays; tooth damage from even minor trauma and in rare cases, tumors both benign and malignant. Oregon law requires your dentist to take routine dental x-rays. For those of you with dental insurance, it covers almost the entire cost of necessary x-rays.

Our office has seen more cavities in our patients in the last year or two than we normally see over a period of several years. I have couple of theories since the increase in decay corresponds with the recession. Possibly, stress creates a more acid environment in the oral cavity. We may be eating more comfort food which usually seems to be high in sugar. And, perhaps a little depression makes us less vigilant with our home care. And remember delaying treatment only makes the problem worse!

Luckily, there have been some advances in decay prevention.

ClinPro 5000 Toothpaste – Prescription strength fluoride toothpaste with Tri-Calcium Phosphate helps to prevent cavities and remineralize teeth. Use a pea size amount and brush thoroughly. After brushing spit the extra out and do not rinse.

Fluor Protect + Cervitec Plus Varnishes – This is a completely clear two-part varnish we apply to your teeth during an in-office visit. It continually releases fluoride for three months and has an antibacterial component with a three month substantivity as well. As an added benefit, applying this combination has decreased sensitivity in many of our patients!

Act Restoring Mouthwash – Fluoride mouthwash with calcium. Helps to prevent cavities and remineralize teeth.

Trident Xtra Care – Remineralizing gum with Recaldent and xylitol. Recaldent is another form of calcium proven to help strengthen teeth.

Spry Gum and Mints – Spry uses only xylitol as a sweetener. No artificial sweeteners or sugar. Xylitol helps to starve the bacteria that cause cavities and neutralize pH of saliva after eating. You can also find xylitol suckers and xylitol by the bag to use in place of sugar.

Cari-free- This is an office administered program. An initial rinse is used to rid the mouth of all bacteria. Then a maintenance rinse is utilized to only allow the mouth to recolonize with the “good” bugs.

Smart Mouth – While this rinse is not part of a cavity prevention protocol, it deserves mention. It is a two-part mouthwash that cures even the worst cases of bad breath! It even works well for that bad taste/smell that can accompany post-nasal drip and makes “morning breath” a thing of the past!

What to Do about Periodontal Disease

How can periodontal (gum) disease be treated?

The practice of preventing and treating gum disease is known as periodontics. Because periodontal disease is an infection in your gums and jawbone, the goal of treatment is to remove the infection and prevent it from returning. Depending on your stage of gum disease, different treatments can be implemented.

These include:

Scale and root plane: If caught early enough, most cases of gum diseases can be treated this way. Similar to a regular cleaning, a scale and root plane also scrapes tartar from beneath your gum line, then smooths or "planes" your tooth root's surface to prevent harmful bacteria from accumulating.

Perioscopy: When scale and root plane therapy does not work, perioscopy is recommended. This procedure utilizes a dental endoscope to view any bacteria and tartar in your pockets (space between teeth and gums) that prohibits healing so it can be removed.

Does periodontal treatment hurt?

Bridge or Implant? Which Is Right for Me?

Both a dental bridge and dental implant can be used to replace one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridge

A dental bridge is the traditional way a missing tooth is replaced. It works by using an artificial tooth to "bridge" the empty gap. However, to do this, a bridge requires the placement of crowns on the teeth on either side of your empty space to hold the false tooth in place. To hold the crowns in place, your adjacent teeth must be prepared, or shaved down so that the restorations will fit over them.

Dental implant

A dental implant is made of titanium and permanently fastened into your jaw where it acts like your natural tooth root. On this screw, a restoration such as a dental crown can be placed. A dental implant can also better secure dentures and partials.

The procedure that is right for you depends on other factors as well. If you do not want your healthy teeth altered, a dental implant may be recommended.

Crown or Implant? When It’s Best to Let a Tooth Go

You should always try to save your natural tooth by placing a protective dental crown, when possible. However, in cases where a tooth is too badly damaged or becomes infected, saving a tooth may not be possible. If this is the case, it is best to have the tooth pulled, and have a dental implant inserted. A dental implant acts as your tooth's root, and can hold a restoration in place.

Protects and strengthens damaged teeth, restoring their natural shape
Works well for both front teeth and molars
Is stain-resistant
Can be fit in just two visits

Maintaining your dental implants

Following dental implant surgery, it is essential that you clean and maintain your implants properly. If you fail to maintain good oral hygiene, your implants can fail.

Be sure to brush and floss at least twice a day to prevent plaque, bacteria and germs from collecting around your artificial tooth and implant area. It is also a good idea to use an alcohol-free mouthwash to kill any stubborn bacteria.

When brushing, an electric toothbrush or one with an angled head works best for the most thorough cleaning. Brush in small circles along every area of your implant, making sure some bristles also hit your gumline. When flossing, be sure to guide the floss around your implant, and then wrap the floss around the side of your implant and down to your gumline. Floss threaders are also helpful because they allow you to hit the hard-to-reach areas.
Read toothpaste ingredients carefully. You do not want a toothpaste with baking soda, stain removers, or abrasive ingredients. These chemicals can remove the glaze on porcelain restorations like dental crowns.

And perhaps most important, be sure to see Dr. Wendling at least twice a year for a routine cleaning and check up. This way, you can be sure that your implants are healthy and functioning properly.

If you have silver or "black" appearing fillings in your mouth, they are half mercury and a mixture of silver, copper and tin makes up the other half. These amalgam fillings were pretty much all that was available a hundred plus years ago. But, there are many inherent problems with these fillings. In addition to mercury being a deadly neurotoxin, these fillings weaken teeth, require a large amount of tooth removal for retention, and since they are not sealed to the teeth they allow decay to form underneath them.

Dr. Wendling uses a porcelain composite material for fillings. This composite resin filling is more natural looking and requires less tooth reduction. Because it is a strong, durable substance bonded to the tooth, it prevents further damage by reinforcing weak teeth. Composite resin fillings can also be used to enhance the appearance of problem teeth.
